Contracted Weta Previs (Pre-Visualisation) Artist and MDS Diploma of 3D Computer Animation grad Julia Chung grew up reading a lot of manga books when she was little, when she found about the world of 3D, she was sold and “blown away by the idea of being able to bring fantasy world of your own into life.”

As a Previs Artist Julia gets to do a little bit of everything;”I get to work with the director to create assets and set up cameras and shots.” The role of the Previs Artist is a key component in the story-telling process, according to Julia, to specialise in such a role requires an good all-round 3D skill-set.

“Different companies have different requirements so do different projects even within the same company. If you are sure Previs is the role you want to go for, I think showing you are an all rounder and a good story teller helps. Creating a short movie which exhibits all of the skills above is a good idea.

Even if you’re not going for a previs role, since the 3D industry in NZ is so small and there are only a certain number of jobs to go around, being an all rounder is a big plus. I have created a modeling and Texturing reel when I was studying but I have rigged and animated the model! s I have created which helped me land my first job as a character animator.”

Julia finds Weta an inspirational place to pitch up to work everday: “As a contractor at Weta, I really like the work environment I’m in. I love the fact I get to work side by side with some of the world’s most talented artists and pick up tips and hints to improve my skill sets.”
