Single hand idly helming most aspects of his first animated 3D short in his spare time, Yukfoo Animation Head of 3D Hamish Beachman (and MDS Diploma of 3D Computer Animation graduate) is nearing the end of his ‘magnum opus.’ The story, co-created with Concept Artist Andre Skuja (from games company Binary Star) is about a boy that goes for an excursion one morning on a little adventure and discovers something that will have terrible consequences for himself and his father. “Cheerful stuff” as Hamish puts it. The short is being constructed using Maya for the 3D, After Effects for the compositing, Photoshop and a little Zbrush for texturing.

Making your own 3D short film is a labour of love, a little testing, but ulitmately a very cool form of self expression. “I am responsible for all the elements of the film. Save for some rigging and modelling help from friends, I am doing the lot. This is great, you have control over everything. But when you’re as busy as I am at Yukfoo and don’t work on it, nothing gets done!,” says Hamish.

“It cannot be underestimated how long a short film can take to get done. I did plan this film with the minimum of character and sets, I did it as smart as I could. I don’t have high render times, I don’t have huge amounts of modelling, texturing, rigging. I have made two changes to my original animatic. Careful planning, pre production are critical.”

Hamish plans to enter the film into film festival and hopes “that people will enjoy the film and that I can enjoy it too!” To see more visit Hamish’s blog at http://hamishbeachman.blogspot.com/
