The James Wallace Art Trust is an esteemed collection of inspiring and emerging New Zealand art, the (over) 4,000 bodies of work contained in it are a cultural resource for present and future generations of New Zealanders. The philanthropic Wallace first began collecting New Zealand art in the mid 1960s.
In recent years greater public access has been given to the Collection by making bodies of works available to some 25 institutions ranging from universities and science research establishments to the Middlemore Hospital Children’s Ward and Spinal Unit on a permanent revolving loan basis.
MDS 3D Instructor Link Choi, also a celebrated Digital Artist in his own right, has had his undoubtable talent recognised by the James Wallace Art Trust with his Christ at the Pillar piece recently being selected.
Link uses traditional painting techniques fused with matte painting and digital collage (using Adobe Photoshop). Of the piece of art, Link had this to say:
“This is my interpretation of the biblical scene depicting the flogging of Christ, as seen through the eyes of my times. I want to explore lasting truths by dressing old stories in contemporary trappings.”
Link has previously exhibited in 2009 at the Sattelite Gallery in Newton, Auckland. One of the pieces from the exhibition – The Annunciation – is featured above.
